HOW DO I DECORATE FOR FALL?
When you want to update your home for the fall and incorporate all that you appreciate about sustainable living and Green Interior Design, use items that you already have around the house. Get creative and add in natural earth elements and fall colors. Don’t forget those sensory layers that really make fall feel cozy – those yummy scents, textures and dimmed amber lights.

When you decorate for fall, let it be a reflection of your natural surroundings, whether you’re by the beach, near a tree filled canyon or out in the dusty desert. Bring those colors and elements into your home for that continued indoor outdoor connection.
5 EASY FALL DECOR IDEAS
1. MUTED FALL COLORS
Instantly change the look and feel of any room with darker and moodier colors. Start with your basic neutrals that you may already have throughout your home, like black, white, grey and browns. Take away any light or cool colors, and add in warm, seasonal autumn shades.
Basic Neutral Colors in Earth Tones:
- White Linen or Beige
- Heather Grey
- Woody Browns or Rich Espresso
- Black or Charcoal
Fall Accent Colors:
- Rusty Copper
- Gold
- Red Clay
- Olive or Sage Green

2. FALL’S NATURAL ELEMENTS
Nothing says fall decor more than all things earthy. Add any of these items to your table settings or fireplace mantel for instant fall style:
- Twigs, Logs, Branches or Bark
- Candles (Fire!)
- Dark Leafy Plants
- Pinecones or Fallen Leaves
- Dry Food like Gourds and Pumpkins
- Flowers in Red, Orange or Gold
- Animal Decor or Elements
- Organic Items in Shapes and Fall Colors Inspired by Your Home’s Location
If you’re on a budget or don’t want to buy anything, then take a hike. The easiest place to find earth elements for your home is to take a walk in nature and see what you find. This could easily be fallen branches or pinecones to place in a tall vase or on the dining table.
3. FALL SCENTS
When you get even the slightest hint of cinnamon, or pumpkin, it instantly feels like fall. An easy way to add fall flavor to your home is with Candles or Essential Oil Diffusers.
As we’re now spending more and more time inside, especially as the nights become longer, candles are a great way to layer in that coziness factor and cue your circadian rhythm that it’s time to wind down before bed. What better way to get in the mood than to fill the air with the seasonal scents like Smoky Tobacco, Cinnamon, Spiced Pumpkin, Rosemary or Olive.
Seasonal Harvest Scents:
- Cinnamon
- Spiced Pumpkin
- Smoky Tobacco
- Clove
- Pepper
- Rosemary
- Olive
- Nutmeg
- Sandalwood
- Cedarwood
- Eucalyptus
- Wild Orange Peel
DESIGN TIP:
There are now plenty of healthier alternatives to traditional candles that are typically made with paraffin wax. This wax comes from bleached petroleum waste product which turns into a carcinogen when burned. No bueno.
Find creative ways to re-use or re-purpose your candle containers to avoid waste.

4. FALL ACCESSORIES
One of the easiest ways to transform any room into a new season is through accessories.
We’re talking Bedding, Bathroom Towels, Kitchen Linens, Pillows, Throw Blankets and Rugs.
Other than painting the room, adding new pillows or blankets to your bed or sofa is one of the easiest thing you could do. And has the best potential of giving you some real bang for your buck.
DESIGN TIP:
Save space and still have an impressive pillow collection! Instead of buying complete pillows for every season, purchase pillow covers instead. You can keep a set of pillow inserts and just change the covers as you like. Storing the flat seasonal pillow covers takes up much less space.
5. MOOD LIGHTING
The days are getting shorter and it’s dark a little earlier. Go with the flow and ease into the night instead of turning your lights on full blast. Allow your lighting to mimic the arc of the sun and really set the mood for that cozy fall feeling. (Plus it’ll help you sleep better!)
Along with candles in your favorite fall color, having your lights dimmed low offers a soft warm glow in gold and amber, which feels like a campfire.
A seasonal fun favorite that lasts into the winter is to collect a strand of Twinkle Lights inside a large glass vase, placed on a table or shelf in the corner of a room.

DESIGN TIP:
Make sure your bulbs are warm white, edison style, yellow or amber for that relaxing, fall fire glow. Brighter bulbs (that read more blue) give off light similar to high noon sun and can really spoil the mood.
