November, 2005

What makes this California home “green’ and serene?

When most people hear that a house is green friendly they have little or no idea what this term alludes to. What makes a green home? Basically it’s a desire to change the world little by little by changing our living environment. This means using the least amount of resources, conserving energy and causing minimal negative impact on the earth.

A passion for green.

Homeowner Jeff Mora, chef for the Los Angeles Lakers, environmentalist, and soon to be restaurateur, decided to put his money where his passion is. That’s where interior designer Lori Dennis, came in. not many decorators think twice about conservation and how they can impact the environment.

Lori specializes in green design, a form of design that focuses on being environmentally responsible. For example, purchasing products from local vendors to conserve fuel cost.

A space at the top of the stairs serves as a library as well as a dining room. Butcher block flooring made of reclaimed wood from older buildings brightens the dining area. The chandelier was constructed of fallen twigs.

Living green means controlling indoor temperature with minimum use of pollution-causing energy sources. Jeff used solar film on all the windows to tame the California sun and reduce the need for air conditioning.

Polyester or other synthetics that release chemicals into the air have been banned from the bedroom. Only natural fibers, such as linen and cotton, were used for bedding and draperies.

Tumbled marble, travertine and complementary earth metals were blended for a simple but stunning look in the small bathroom.

No need for over furnishing; a natural leather chair is the perfect size for enjoying a favorite book.

Easy ways to go green. No matter where you call home, there are dozens of simple ways to bring in the Green. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Using low VOC paint is an easy way to make your home more earth-friendly.

Even something as small as using florescent light bulbs instead of incandescent ones can make a significant different in energy savings.

Don’t forget the green in Green; natural plants not only bring an element of beauty but also clean the air.

Go to flea markets and thrift stores to pick up accessories for your home rather than big chain stores; this prevents perfectly good furniture and accessories from going into landfills.
